Last Thursday was a big night out in town. The evening kicked off well when Wolf Slayer finally broke her duck at Wolverhampton. I’d only realised she was running late on in the day and I was on the tube at the time of the race, but it was nice to see her finish one in front. We may keep her going for another race or two over the winter.
Later I was at the Bobby Moore quiz on the Old Betfairians table. It’s a big event and normally gets more than 50 tables – we have a strong team but we have only one it once. Invariably we are in the top three, usually second, and this night was no exception.
I contribute mostly in tennis and old stuff – it’s sad to say on this occasion I’m not sure I answered a single question that wasn’t answered elsewhere on the team. Ladbrokes had four teams, and one of them ran out a comfortable winner – we were comfortably beaten but also well clear of third. I noted a couple of significant ringers in the Ladbrokes team as they went up for their prize – shocking behaviour…
After the quiz we headed down to the Betfair Christmas party, which by the time I got there had become a disco. I’m not the man I was when it comes to these events, which is probably no bad thing. I left in the early hours, and staggered through London for 30 minutes looking for a cab. I was in a terrible state on Friday morning – the body doesn’t forgive like it once did.
I have another event to go to today – the HWPA awards – and I’m blogging from the cab. I was running late and couldn’t establish whether it was black tie or just lounge suit, so I’ve come in an eclectic mix of the two – it gave Jane a laugh on the way out the door.
I have a runner today and I feel pretty good about her chances. Westaern Eyes goes in the 3:00 – she’s taken her time to get it together but she’s fit, she showed last time that her attitude is ok and she stays. She should be in with a real shout in this low grade.
